The role of the healthcare practitioner is a unique one as it requires the practice of compassion alongside a demanding work schedule this requires finding a sustainable way to maintain resiliency whilst avoiding burnout. We need healthy healers in order to heal.
In 2015 Jo studied “Integrating Yoga Principles into Healthcare Delivery” with Matthew Sanford in Minneapolis and subsequently spent three years with the Kingston Hospital NHS Trust, London, UK as a Mind-Body Practitioner in our Wellbeing team of 3, our small team was awarded the Healthcare People Management Association Award for Wellbeing in June 2019. (see record of success below)
We bring embodiment techniques born out of the practice of Yoga and Somatics, to help you find sustainable ways to practice self care and avoid burnout by grounding the body and calming the mind as you work. This is not something separate to the work you do already, it is simply improving the way you inhabit your body as you work.
This will help you develop a sustainable healing relationship between patient and caregiver by learning how to establish compassionate connection whilst maintaining healthy boundary. It will also help your patients and reduce re-admission by engaging the body and mind in the healing process.
Kingston Hospital’s Wellbeing Journey:
In 2017, Kingston Hospital, UK reported its highest turnover rates of around 18% alongside steadily increasing sickness rates, with anxiety/stress/ depression frequently being cited as the main reasons for absence.
Recognizing that staff are the greatest resource an acute hospital has, the trust wanted to create an environment that encouraged staff to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. To this end the Wellbeing team was crated with myself as Mind-Body Practitioner, a staff Chaplain and specialist Physiotherapist. We set up initiatives across the trust across the trust to support mental health and enhance emotional resilience including Stress & Resilience workshops, 1:1 Time to Talk with the chaplain, advice & support to managers, specific issue or event debriefs and 1:1 Mind-body awareness.
In the NHS Survey for engagement, the Trust now ranks in the top 20% of acute trusts (11 out of 93) and the third best score in London. It is now rated as ‘Outstanding’ for overall quality and ‘Well Led’ by the CQC in August 2018. The Trust has succeeded in jumping in ratings from ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Outstanding’ in just two years. Turnover has also gone from 17.83% to 14.39% and sickness absence is maintained at below 3%, currently 2.79%
This lead our team to winning the Healthcare People Management Association Award for Wellbeing in June 2019.
